Democrat Rep. Calls for Distinction between Israeli Government and Jewish People Amid Rising Antisemitism

IDF spokesman Maj. Doron Spielman reacts to Saudi Prince Abdulrahman bin Mosaad claiming the ‘Axis of Resistance’ is a big lie and discusses Israel’s assault on Gaza on ‘One Nation.’ New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a Democrat, is calling for a “clear distinction” to be made between Israel’s citizens and the country’s government as there has been a rising number of cases of antisemitism in the U.S. and around the world amid the war between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists.

Bowman explained that people can hold the Israeli government accountable while also standing with the Jewish people against hate and antisemitism. He emphasized that the Israeli government is not representative of the Jewish people and that criticizing the government does not equate to criticizing Jewish individuals. He drew parallels to criticizing other governments, such as Myanmar and Saudi Arabia, without criticizing the religions or ethnicities of their respective populations.

The congressman highlighted the need for governments to prioritize the well-being of their people instead of exploiting their suffering for political gain. He expressed concern over the loss of lives and the widespread violence in Gaza and Israel, urging the Biden administration to ensure that Israel is following international law in its war against Hamas.

Bowman is among several progressive Democrats who have been critical of the Israeli government’s actions since the conflict with Hamas began. He co-sponsored a resolution calling for a cease-fire and was one of the few House members who voted against a resolution condemning antisemitism on college campuses, emphasizing the importance of free speech without intimidation.

While the Biden administration has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself and has provided aid, Bowman criticized the lack of accountability for potential violations of international law. He called for honest conversations about human rights and international law, holding allies accountable when necessary.

The article concludes by acknowledging the ongoing conflict and the need for dialogue and diplomatic solutions to ensure the rights and safety of both Israelis and Palestinians.
