American University Students Show Support for Israeli Hostages’ Families During Pro-Palestinian Walkout

American University students gathered in a walkout event to express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Surprisingly, most of the college students at the pro-Palestinian protest had supportive messages for the families of Israeli hostages. While sympathizing with their pain and praying for their safe return, the students also voiced their concerns about the actions of Hamas and Israel’s role in the conflict.

Malak, an American University student, emphasized her empathy for the Israeli hostages’ families and hoped they would understand her perspective. Another student named Chris expressed his apologies to the families, but also held Israel accountable for Hamas’ actions. He argued that Israel’s longstanding blockade of Gaza had forced Hamas to resort to extreme measures.

During the protest, a truck displaying images of the Israeli hostages drove around the American University campus. The demonstration, organized by the Students for Justice in Palestine group, attracted over a hundred students and faculty members who demanded that the university recognize the ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

The students highlighted the failed attempts of Gazans to peacefully resolve the conflict and seek international support. They emphasized the importance of recognizing the humanity of everyone involved, focusing on the people rather than the states or organizations responsible for the violence.

As of Friday, Hamas was holding 241 hostages, including at least 10 Americans, according to Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari. The war, which began on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of approximately 8,600 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis, according to their respective administrations.

In an effort to address the situation, Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Israel to discuss a humanitarian pause with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, Netanyahu rejected the proposal, stating that no ceasefire would be brokered until Hamas released all hostages.

The students also expressed concern for the impact of the war on children, emphasizing that they should not suffer due to politicians’ decisions. They hoped for the safe return of all individuals involved and acknowledged the devastating loss experienced by many Palestinians who have lost entire families.
