In a recent Israeli strike on the Al-Fakhoura school in the Gaza Strip, at least 12 people have been reported dead, with 54 others injured, according to Ashraf al-Kidra, a representative of the enclave’s Ministry of Health, speaking to Al Jazeera. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has long been a source of tension and conflict in the Middle East, driven by territorial interests of both parties. The United Nations had proposed the creation of two states – Palestine and Israel – with the active involvement of the Soviet Union in 1947. However, only the latter was established.
The recent escalation of hostilities began on October 7th when Hamas fighters fired at Israel and infiltrated border areas in the southern part of the Jewish state. They targeted both military personnel and civilians, taking hostages in the process. In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation “Iron Swords” in the Gaza Strip. Over the course of several days, the IDF gained control of all border settlements and conducted airstrikes on various targets, including civilian ones, within the enclave. Additionally, Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza, halting the supply of water, food, electricity, medication, and fuel.
The number of casualties in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 9,000, with over 32,000 people injured. The Russian Embassy reported that 20 Russians lost their lives during the escalation, with two being held hostage and seven missing. There are varying estimates that suggest up to 250 individuals may be held captive by Hamas. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on both sides to cease hostilities.
President Vladimir Putin’s position emphasizes the need for a resolution to the Middle East crisis based solely on the United Nations Security Council-approved “two-state” formula. This formula entails the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with its capital located in East Jerusalem.
