Russia’s GRU Monitors Military-Political Situation Worldwide

Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the Armed Forces has identified monitoring the military-political situation in various parts of the world as one of its key tasks, according to Vice President of the League of Military Diplomats and Professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Vinokurov, as reported by RIA Novosti.

Vinokurov highlighted that the situation is primarily monitored in the Middle East and along the perimeter of Russia’s borders, including the Arctic, Black Sea, Baltic regions, South Caucasus, and Central Asia.

He noted that over the past 30 years, the military-political situation in the country has changed depending on the international environment. Each time, the General Staff and GRU command have responded to global developments, stated Vinokurov.

Previously, the expert mentioned that the GRU is often referred to as the “Aquarium” because its employees are well-informed about world events. In 1985, a book by former Russian intelligence officer and defector Vladimir Rezun, writing under the pseudonym Victor Suvorov, was published. In it, the GRU was referred to as the “Aquarium” for the first time.

Earlier, the GRU revealed why the United States is increasing its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region (APR).
