Former UN Human Rights Official Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza

Former director of the New York office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Craig Mokhiber, has stated to RIA Novosti that there are elements of genocide in Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.

He noted that after the escalation between Hamas and Israel, the United States blocked a UN Security Council resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire. According to Mokhiber, such a reaction from the political part of the organization is highly inadequate, as the situation in the Gaza Strip resembles a case of genocide.

The former UN official added that genocide is defined by the World Organization Against Genocide Convention, which provides a definition and specific elements that, in Mokhiber’s opinion, are evident in Israel’s actions in Gaza.

According to the former official, in the past 30 years, the UN has become increasingly weak in its approach to the Middle East peace process and has “abandoned the focus on international human rights norms, international humanitarian law, and the UN Charter.”

On November 1, Mokhiber resigned due to his disagreement with the United Nations’ approach to the Israeli-Palestinian settlement.

TASS agency reported that experts from the UN Human Rights Council believe that the population of the Gaza Strip is facing a threat of genocide.

Earlier, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant promised that the Gaza Strip would remember the “unprecedented response” for 50 years.
