Russia Receives Notification of US Missile Test, Concerns Over Nuclear Weapons Return

The press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, has stated that Moscow received notification from Washington regarding the test launch of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

A Kremlin representative noted that such launches are subject to notification through appropriate channels.

“Therefore, all necessary notifications have certainly been received,” said Peskov.

Prior to this, the US Air Force announced that American military personnel had destroyed a Minuteman III ICBM in flight over the Pacific Ocean. It was clarified that this occurred due to malfunctions during the test launch. A commission consisting of representatives from relevant agencies was assembled to determine the cause of the incident.

On October 16, it was reported that Russia continues to abide by the quantitative limitations outlined in the Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Offensive Arms.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed concern that the US may return nuclear weapons to British territory. According to Vladimir Ermakov, the Director of the Department of Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at the Foreign Ministry, such a move is taken into account in Russia’s strategy to ensure defense interests. Ermakov added that the suspension of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was a necessary, legitimate, and fully justified step on Russia’s part.
