Progressive Democrat Ro Khanna’s Support for Biden Sparks Speculation of Future Presidential Run

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California recently made a trip to New Hampshire to show his support for President Biden’s 2024 reelection effort. However, his visit has sparked speculation that Khanna may have his own national run in mind for 2028. Khanna, who co-chaired Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, expressed his unwavering support for Biden’s reelection during a digital interview, stating that he is a dedicated foot soldier in ensuring the president’s victory. Yet, while Khanna remains focused on the upcoming 2024 election, his frequent visits to New Hampshire and involvement in local Democratic events have fueled rumors of a potential presidential bid in 2028.

During a recent policy debate with Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, Khanna discussed his ideas and engaged in a cordial discussion on policy differences. This debate took place in New Hampshire, a state that holds significant importance as the traditional first-in-the-nation presidential primary state. Khanna’s repeated visits to the state, including headlining the McIntyre-Shaheen gala, the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s largest annual fundraiser, have only intensified speculation about his future political aspirations.

Notably, Khanna has garnered significant support from influential figures within the New Hampshire Democratic Party. Jim Demers, a longtime New Hampshire-based Democratic consultant and prominent Biden supporter, praised Khanna’s commitment to the state, stating that he has become one of the best friends of New Hampshire Democrats. Demers added that Khanna’s ability to make friends and build relationships in the state could give him an advantage in a future presidential race.

Furthermore, a progressive activist and leader in New Hampshire, who chose to remain anonymous, referred to Khanna as “the fifth member” of the state’s all-Democratic four-person congressional delegation. This activist believes that Khanna, being a co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ campaign, naturally appeals to Sanders’ supporters and has generated buzz among them.

Despite the speculation surrounding his future plans, Khanna remains focused on the present. He acknowledges that winning the 2024 election is the immediate priority and supports President Biden’s proposed nominating calendar, which replaced New Hampshire with South Carolina as the lead-off primary state. However, New Hampshire is determined to maintain its cherished century-old first-in-the-nation primary status, and a write-in campaign for Biden has been launched by top Democrats in the state. Khanna, along with other Sanders supporters, has expressed their commitment to working hard for the president in New Hampshire to ensure his victory in the write-in campaign.

As the 2024 campaign trail unfolds, Khanna’s support for Biden and his active involvement in New Hampshire politics continue to fuel speculation about his own presidential aspirations. While Khanna remains dedicated to the current election, it is clear that he has caught the attention of influential figures within the Democratic Party, positioning him as a potential future contender.
