President Biden to Meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco for Intense Diplomatic Talks

President Biden is set to hold a face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco next month, as confirmed by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during a press conference on Tuesday. The meeting, which will take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit from November 11 to November 17, aims to re-establish trust and communication between the two world leaders.

The White House emphasized the importance of “competition” between the United States and China, characterizing the upcoming meeting as a platform for intense diplomacy and tough conversations. Despite recent tensions and disagreements, the Biden administration maintains that its policy towards China remains unchanged and that the goal is to move forward with intense competition through diplomatic means.

This meeting comes after Biden and Xi last spoke during the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November 2022, where they both agreed on the need for more direct communication between their respective countries. In an effort to further strengthen ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently met with Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. Blinken had previously met with Xi in June, and Xi also had a meeting with California Governor Gavin Newsom last month.

Sino-U.S. relations have faced challenges earlier this year, including the discovery and shooting down of Chinese spy craft in U.S. airspace, as well as the issue of Taiwan’s independence. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and conflicts between Hamas and Israel have also complicated the relationship between the two nations.

The upcoming meeting between President Biden and President Xi is seen as a significant event in the context of global affairs. It provides an opportunity for both leaders to engage in constructive discussions and work towards finding common ground on various issues of mutual concern, ultimately aiming to improve bilateral relations between the United States and China.
