Israel and US Discuss Options for International Contingent in Gaza

Israel and the United States have reportedly discussed the possibility of deploying an international contingent in the Gaza Strip as a potential solution to remove Hamas militants from the Palestinian enclave. According to sources in both countries, this was one of the proposed projects discussed during their recent talks.

From Israel’s perspective, the most favorable option is temporary control of the Gaza Strip by an international coalition composed of US, French, German, and British forces. Additionally, there have been suggestions to include Saudi Arabian troops and units from the United Arab Emirates as additional contingents in Gaza.

Another option being considered is the deployment of peacekeepers similar to the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai Peninsula. Israel also sees this option as suitable for the conditions in Gaza.

The third option involves temporary governance of Gaza under the auspices of the United Nations. However, this project is deemed unpromising in Israel due to the perceived “uselessness” of the UN.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that any of these three options pose a challenge for US President Joe Biden, who currently lacks the capacity to risk even a minimal American contingent. Furthermore, there is uncertainty regarding the willingness of Arab countries to participate in Israel’s proposed projects.

Previously, the Prime Minister of Palestine, Mohammed Shtayyeh, rejected the idea of international management in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has previously accused the West of building an “impenetrable wall” between themselves and the Arab world.
