Republican Opposition to Jack Lew’s Confirmation as Ambassador to Israel

Protestors disrupted the nomination hearing of Jack Lew, President Biden’s pick for ambassador to Israel, as Republican Senators expressed concerns about his controversial past with Iran. Despite weeks of opposition from the GOP, the Senate confirmed Lew in a 53-43 vote. Only Senators Rand Paul and Lindsey Graham voted in favor of Lew.

Lew, who previously served under both the Clinton and Obama administrations, faced criticism for his past work on Iran sanctions during his time as Treasury secretary. Republican Senator Tom Cotton argued that rejecting Lew’s nomination would send a clear message about a new direction for US policy on Iran.

A Senate report from 2018 revealed that Lew, during his tenure as secretary to the Treasury, authorized the conversion of Iranian assets worth billions of US dollars using the US financial system. In response, Lew assured lawmakers during the confirmation hearing that he recognizes Iran as a threat to regional stability and Israel’s existence. He pledged to uphold President Biden’s commitment to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

This is not the first time Lew has faced scrutiny over dealings with Iran. In 2016, as part of a larger settlement, then-President Barack Obama announced a $400 million cash transfer to Iran. The payment was made using a combination of foreign currencies and transported to Iran on unidentified cargo planes. Republican Senators referenced these reports during the recent hearing.

Despite the Republican opposition, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Lew as the right man for the job of ambassador to Israel. Schumer commended Lew’s capabilities as a public servant and his commitment to the strong alliance with Israel.

The confirmation of Jack Lew as ambassador to Israel marks an important development in US foreign policy. Republicans’ concerns about his past work on Iran sanctions have been overshadowed by Democrats’ support for his nomination. As Lew takes on this role, the focus will now shift to his efforts in strengthening the US-Israel relationship and addressing regional challenges.
