A shocking incident unfolded in San Francisco on Sunday as a 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a parishioner inside a Catholic church and later throwing pipe bombs at police officers during a car chase. The suspect, a resident of Concord, California, was apprehended by California Highway Patrol officers in Martinez, east of San Francisco, following a 30-minute pursuit.
According to San Francisco Assistant Police Chief David Lazar, the suspect has been booked on charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of an explosive device, and other crimes. The incident began when the man punched a parishioner in the head during mass at the Saints Peter and Paul Church in the city’s North Beach neighborhood, temporarily knocking him unconscious. Police were called to the scene after the assault took place.
Peter Marlow, spokesperson for the San Francisco Archdiocese, provided further insight into the incident, stating that the man attacked the parishioner after being reprimanded for not consuming the consecrated host at Communion. After the assault, the suspect pulled out a knife and fled the church, leading police officers on a car chase through city streets.
During the pursuit, a few blocks away from the church, the fleeing driver threw a pipe bomb at the pursuing officers, causing flames and detonation. He then proceeded to throw a second, larger bomb before crossing the Bay Bridge. Fortunately, no officers were injured during these frightening moments.
