California Police Warn Parents to Check Halloween Candy for THC-Infused Treats

Police in California are urging parents to be vigilant and inspect their children’s Halloween candy after a child fell ill from ingesting a THC-infused treat at a local trick-or-treating event. The Alameda Police Department is currently investigating the incident and has advised parents to exercise extra caution.

The incident occurred at a “Trunk or Treat” event held at Amelia Earhart Elementary School in Alameda on Sunday. According to reports from FOX2 KTVU, the child’s parents discovered a wrapper indicating that the candy was cannabis-infused after their child required immediate medical attention.

Susan Davis, the senior manager for community affairs for the Alameda Unified School District, emphasized the importance of checking candy this year, as cannabis-infused products can closely resemble regular candy. Beth Meloy, a parent who attended the event, described the THC-infused candy as resembling a “standalone Starburst.” Meloy became aware of the packaging difference only after receiving notifications from other parents and the school.

To raise awareness, the Alameda Police Department shared photos comparing popular name-brand candy with THC-infused products that have similar packaging. They urged parents to take precautions, including checking for unusual packaging or tampering, educating their children about not consuming candy that is not in its original packaging or has not been checked by parents, and contacting the police if any concerns arise.

Police advised parents to discard any candy that raises doubts about its authenticity. It is better to err on the side of caution and prioritize children’s safety. Halloween should be a fun and enjoyable experience, but it is essential to remain vigilant and ensure that children are not unknowingly consuming potentially harmful substances.

In conclusion, parents in California are being alerted to the potential dangers of THC-infused candy this Halloween. The incident in Alameda serves as a reminder for parents to carefully inspect their children’s candy and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Education and awareness are crucial in preventing any unfortunate incidents during this festive season.
