Harvard faced severe backlash when 34 student organizations signed a statement blaming the “Israeli regime” for the violence that unfolded during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Initially, Gay released a brief message condemning Hamas’ attacks but did not explicitly denounce the student groups’ controversial opinion. However, in a later video message, she clarified that while the university does not punish or sanction individuals for expressing polarizing views, it does not endorse them either.
The university’s response to the controversy has triggered significant consequences. A top law firm rescinded job offers to students affiliated with the student organizations involved. Additionally, several prominent donors severed their ties with Harvard, and former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan withdrew from the university’s fellowship programs due to what he deemed “dangerous” antisemitism on campus.
