Canadian Solar to Build $800 Million Solar Panel Factory in Indiana, Creating 1,200 Jobs

Ontario-based Canadian Solar Inc. has announced plans to construct an $800 million solar panel factory in southeastern Indiana, a move that will generate approximately 1,200 jobs once production reaches full capacity. The company has selected the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, located just north of Louisville, Kentucky, as the site for its new photovoltaic cell factory. Production is set to commence by the end of 2025, with the facility capable of producing around 20,000 high-power solar panels per day. The finished solar cells will then be transported to Canadian Solar’s module assembly facility in Mesquite, Texas.

Dr. Shawn Qu, founder and CEO of Canadian Solar, expressed the significance of establishing this new factory, stating, “This is a key milestone that will enable us to better serve our U.S. customers with the most advanced technology in the industry.” The company plans to begin hiring for new positions in mid-2024 and expects to fully staff the Jeffersonville plant by early 2025.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb praised the investment, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the local workforce and renewable energy accessibility nationwide. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation has committed to providing Canadian Solar with up to $9.7 million in tax credits and up to $400,000 in conditional training grants, among other incentives. These benefits will be made available to the company once investments are made, and employees are hired and trained.

The decision to build a solar panel factory in Indiana showcases the increasing importance of renewable energy in the United States. As the country seeks to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable sources of power, this investment by Canadian Solar represents a significant step forward. The creation of 1,200 jobs is a welcome development for the local economy and the broader push towards green energy.

In conclusion, Canadian Solar’s decision to invest in the construction of a solar panel factory in Indiana is poised to bring about positive economic and environmental outcomes. With the potential to produce a significant number of high-power solar panels each day, this venture demonstrates the company’s commitment to serving its U.S. customers with cutting-edge technology. The support and incentives provided by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation further highlight the state’s dedication to fostering renewable energy growth.
