A shocking incident unfolded at a courthouse in Tennessee as an inmate was fatally stabbed while awaiting his court appearance. The victim, 25-year-old Deion Byrd, was attacked in a holding area of the Shelby County Criminal Court and later succumbed to his injuries. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the tragic incident on social media. The alleged perpetrator, 21-year-old Donnie Clay, has been charged with murder and smuggling contraband into the jail.
The incident occurred when multiple inmates were brought to the facility for their respective court hearings before Judge Paula Skahan. A commotion erupted, leading to the fatal stabbing of Byrd by Clay. Judge Skahan, who was about to take the bench, expressed her shock and disbelief. “Anybody could have been attacked. I just don’t understand how this can happen,” she said.
According to an affidavit, the altercation began when Byrd accused Clay of breaking into his home, which Clay denied. In a fit of rage, Byrd spat in Clay’s face, leading Clay to threaten him with death. Clay then pulled out a sharpened piece of metal from his waistband and chased Byrd into a nearby interview room, where the stabbing took place. Byrd suffered at least one stab wound to the neck.
The incident raises concerns about the security measures in place within the jail. It remains unclear how a sharp object managed to bypass the jail’s security protocols. Byrd’s mother, Laquita Byrd, expressed her grief and demanded justice for her son. “His life didn’t deserve to be taken like that,” she said. “He’s gone, and you are supposed to be in the safest place. You’re at 201 Poplar. All the metal detectors, all the sheriff’s deputies.”
