The Maine Department of Labor has officially requested a waiver from the federal government, seeking permission for asylum seekers to work while their cases are pending. Labor Secretary Laura Fortman emphasized that eliminating the 180-day waiting period for work permits would not only benefit the asylum seekers themselves but also alleviate the workforce shortage that Maine is currently facing. With an unemployment rate of 2.7% in September, the state recognizes the need to address resource-based issues and provide opportunities for asylum seekers to contribute to society.
Maine’s largest city, Portland, has seen an influx of over 1,600 asylum seekers this year, putting a strain on resources and housing. In response to this challenge, Democratic Governor Janet Mills signed a bipartisan bill in May, instructing the labor commissioner to seek a waiver. The aim is to support the newcomers in becoming self-sufficient and alleviate the burden on the state.
Secretary Fortman highlighted the importance of allowing asylum seekers to work earlier, stating that it would help mitigate financial and resource-based challenges faced by the state and municipalities. The ultimate goal is to empower asylum seekers to stand on their own and contribute to society. While federal law currently does not include provisions for such a waiver, there is growing support for the idea.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has expressed its support for separate bills sponsored by U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), as well as U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Arizona), which aim to shorten the waiting period to 30 days. This bipartisan support signifies a recognition of the potential benefits of allowing asylum seekers to enter the workforce sooner.
