GOP Gov. Chris Sununu Joins Forces with Ron DeSantis on New Hampshire Campaign Trail, Signals Open Republican Race

Former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the 2024 Republican nomination race, but New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu suggests that the race in the first primary state is “wide open.” Sununu, who plans to make an endorsement later this year, has been campaigning alongside several Republican candidates in New Hampshire, a crucial state in the GOP presidential nominating calendar. In a recent interview, Sununu emphasized that his day spent with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was a signal of DeSantis’ commitment to New Hampshire.

While Trump remains the front-runner, DeSantis has consistently held second place in the polls, ahead of other Republican contenders. However, former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has recently surpassed DeSantis in some polls in New Hampshire and her home state of South Carolina. Sununu, who has teamed up with many of DeSantis’ rivals on the campaign trail, acknowledged that there are three or four candidates surging ahead in the race.

Sununu highlighted that Granite State voters tend to make their decisions late, stating that there is still plenty of time for candidates to earn their votes. DeSantis, who has been focusing on both Iowa and New Hampshire, emphasized the importance of showing up and connecting with voters. He also took a subtle jab at Trump’s limited campaign schedule, stating that nobody is entitled to the nomination and that he will take all questions and “earn this thing the way you need to.”

Sununu, who has been praised by the presidential contenders, downplayed the significance of his eventual endorsement, stating that he doesn’t believe endorsements matter as much as the press thinks. However, the contenders have made it clear that they would be thrilled to have Sununu’s backing. Sununu hinted that he will make a decision on his endorsement in November or early December.

As the campaign trail heats up, candidates are vying for support in crucial states like New Hampshire. Sununu’s partnership with DeSantis on the campaign trail indicates that the race for the Republican nomination is far from decided. With Granite State voters known for their late decision-making, candidates have ample opportunity to earn their votes. Sununu’s eventual endorsement, although downplayed by the Governor, holds significant weight for the contenders seeking his support. Stay tuned for more updates and exclusive interviews from the 2024 campaign trail.
