Chinese Military Approaches Taiwan, Heightening Tensions in the Region

The armed forces of Taiwan have reported that 19 aircraft and six ships of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) approached the island within 24 hours. Information about the incidents has been posted on the defense ministry’s website.

According to Taiwanese observers, six aircraft “crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the island’s air defense identification zone to the north, southeast, and southwest of it.” These included the Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft, the TB-001 drone, the H-6 strategic bomber, the KJ-500 long-range radar aircraft, and the Z-9 anti-submarine helicopter.

In response, the Taiwanese army mobilized its own forces, including aviation, ships, and ground-based air defense missile systems, to monitor the targets.

Earlier, the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense reported that 26 aircraft and seven ships of the PLA were detected near the island within 24 hours. Three Su-30 fighters, two J-10s, eight J-16s, the Y-8 electronic reconnaissance aircraft, and the Y-9 electronic warfare aircraft were identified.

Previously, the Philippines blamed China for a collision between ships in the waters of the South China Sea near the Spratly Islands.
