Armenian Prime Minister States Russian Troop Withdrawal Not Discussed

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that the possible withdrawal of Russian troops from the country has not been discussed. This information was reported by TASS.

“Pashinyan stated that at the moment, the possibility of withdrawing the Russian military base from Armenia is not being discussed,” the statement reads.

Earlier, Pashinyan mentioned that he did not see any advantages in having Russian military bases in the country. According to the Armenian Prime Minister, Armenia is seeking new partners because Russia “failed to fulfill its alliance obligations.” He noted that the events in Nagorno-Karabakh led Armenia to search for new defense partners.

Prior to this, the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ararat Mirzoyan, announced that Yerevan approved Russia’s initiative to open its consulate in the city of Kapan, near the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to Mirzoyan, the opening of consulates by several countries in the Syunik region carries “political messages.”

On September 19, the authorities of Azerbaijan declared a local operation in Karabakh. Baku’s goal for the operation is to prevent “large-scale provocations,” disarm, and withdraw Armenian army units from the region.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs deemed Pashinyan’s statements about Russia unacceptable.
