Russian military forces in Eastern Ukraine have reportedly gained valuable insights into the tactics used by Ukrainian kamikaze drones. Through intercepting video signals, an operator of an FPV drone, known by the call sign “Kasper,” from the Northern Fleet’s motorized rifle brigade, has shed light on the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ modus operandi. The Ukrainian forces, operating on the frequency of 5.8 GHz, have been exposed to scrutiny as their operations can be intercepted and observed by Russian forces. This revelation has highlighted the Ukrainian forces’ strategy of engaging in “free hunting,” where they identify their targets on radars only after the UAV is already airborne. The routes of these drones are often predetermined based on previously identified coordinates, detected in advance by aerial reconnaissance UAVs. Shockingly, it has been discovered that the Ukrainian side does not provide any protection for their drones. When their batteries are depleted, the drones simply explode in the air, and new ones are sent to replace them. This significant advantage in drone resources has been attributed to Russia, as the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ attack drone platoon, Yuriy Fedorenko, acknowledged. These findings have raised concerns about the Ukrainian forces’ lack of drone security and the potential implications of this vulnerability. This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine, where Russia has been accused of supporting separatist movements.
