New York City police are currently on the lookout for a person of interest who allegedly pushed a 30-year-old woman into a moving subway train, leaving her in critical condition. The incident occurred at the Fifth Avenue/53rd St station on Thursday afternoon. The individual being pursued, identified as 39-year-old Sabir Jones, is known to law enforcement, according to NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper.
Kemper revealed that the victim was shoved as the train was pulling out of the station, causing her head to strike the moving train. She then fell onto the tracks. Fortunately, there were eyewitnesses and good Samaritans on the platform who were able to help her back onto the platform. The victim was immediately taken to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery for head trauma. She is now in critical condition.
Expressing concern for the victim, Kemper stated, “We pray for her speedy and full recovery.” Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chair and CEO John Lieber also emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the woman is currently “fighting for her life” at the hospital. Lieber emphasized that random attacks on New Yorkers cannot be tolerated, and called for better measures to address the issue.
Sabir Jones, the person of interest in this incident, has a history with law enforcement, according to the NYPD. Images of Jones have been released by the New York City Police Department to aid in their search for him.
This incident highlights a concerning trend in New York City, where 15 people have been pushed onto subway tracks this year alone. However, this number is lower compared to the same period last year, which saw 22 similar incidents. The authorities are actively working to address this issue and ensure the safety of commuters.
