Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in the Cannon Rotunda on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, demanding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The protestors, wearing black T-shirts reading “Jews Say Ceasefire Now!”, chanted “Ceasefire Now!” and called on Congress to intervene and put an end to the fighting in Israel.
The group Jewish Voice for Peace reported that over 350 demonstrators, including two dozen rabbis, were present inside the rotunda, with thousands more outside the U.S. Capitol. However, U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) reminded the protesters that demonstrations are not allowed inside Congressional buildings and took steps to clear the crowd.
USCP warned the growing number of protesters to stop demonstrating, and when they did not comply, arrests were made. So far, three demonstrators have been arrested and charged with assault on a police officer during the demonstrations. Additionally, those inside the Cannon Rotunda will face charges for illegally protesting inside a House Office Building.
To ensure the safety of both protesters and motorists, USCP implemented temporary rolling road closures around the House side of the Capitol Complex, as more protesters were seen walking in the roadway.
This recent demonstration follows a series of pro-Palestinian protests in Washington, D.C. In front of the White House, over 30 protesters were arrested on Monday, while thousands took to the streets over the weekend to advocate for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
It is important to note that the situation in Israel and Palestine remains highly contentious, with ongoing violence causing significant loss of life. The protests at Capitol Hill reflect the growing concern and calls for international intervention to bring an end to the conflict.
