Pennsylvania Man’s Online Mailbox Terminated by Staples Over Political Mailings

In a surprising turn of events, a Pennsylvania man claims that his online mailbox was deactivated by office supply company Staples after he sent out political mailings warning registered voters about sexually explicit reading material in local school libraries. Bob Salera, founder of Stop Bucks Extremism (SBE) in Bucks County, alleges that Staples accused him of violating company policy by sending two political mailings inside sealed envelopes with an “explicit content” disclaimer. These mailings included graphic images from books that Salera believes Democrats are promoting in school libraries.

Salera received an email from a representative of Staples’ president, stating that his iPostal mailbox was being terminated due to offensive treatment of employees, a claim he vehemently denies. Despite never having visited the Staples location or interacted with any employees, Salera sought clarification on the situation and was informed that a mailing using the mailbox return address had offended customers.

Staples reportedly took issue with two separate mailings encouraging Republicans to vote early and against Democrat school board candidates who support sexually explicit books in school libraries. These mailings included images from books such as “Gender Queer: A Memoir” and “This Book Is Gay,” which depict sexually explicit content. Salera argues that the images were taken from pictures of the books that Democrats want in schools, emphasizing that his mailings were sent inside sealed envelopes with a disclaimer warning about their explicit content.

Following numerous complaints from upset customers, Staples declined Salera’s request to reconsider closing his account, leaving him perplexed and frustrated. Salera asserts that his political speech is protected and that it is disconcerting to be banned from an office supply store for exercising this right.

A leading political law firm based in Washington, D.C., has reviewed the situation and determined that Salera did not violate any laws by sending the materials through the mail with appropriate disclaimers. Despite multiple inquiries, Staples has yet to respond to requests for comment or clarify whether it will continue working with school districts that disseminate the material for which Salera’s account was terminated.

The incident raises concerns about the limits of free speech and the potential suppression of political expression. Critics argue that the termination of Salera’s mailbox by Staples infringes upon his right to engage in protected political speech, while supporters of the company may argue that it was acting in response to customer complaints and concerns.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Staples will address the controversy and whether they will reconsider their decision regarding Salera’s account. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing debates surrounding free speech, censorship, and the role of corporations in political discourse.
