Former Head of Regional Environmental Control Agency Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison for Bribery

The former head of the interregional department of Rosprirodnadzor (Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources) for the Samara and Ulyanovsk regions, Oleg Kruchinin, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Nizhny Novgorod District Court. This comes after he was found guilty of accepting a large bribe. As reported by TASS, Kruchinin’s lawyer confirmed the verdict and revealed that his client has also been fined 230 million rubles.

However, the defense attorney highlighted numerous violations in the case and expressed their intention to file an appeal against the sentence.

Oleg Kruchinin was arrested in November 2021 on charges of receiving a bribe of significant value. The publication further notes that he is accused under Article 290, Part 6 of the Criminal Code of Russia, which pertains to accepting bribes of a particularly large scale. According to the prosecutor’s office of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Kruchinin allegedly accepted bribes in exchange for providing protection in the supervision of a company involved in solid household waste management.

Previously, the former head of Rosprirodnadzor for the Samara and Ulyanovsk regions had been placed in custody pending trial.
