Ukraine and Israel Compete for NATO Arms Supplies, Limited Resources Pose Challenge

Ukraine and Israel are vying for arms supplies from NATO, but the alliance is currently facing constraints in its resources, according to an analysis by Christoph Schiltz for Welt. Schiltz noted that NATO countries are reluctant to jeopardize their own defense capabilities, and in addition to the high cost, the availability of weapons is limited.

Within the North Atlantic alliance, there are discussions about the competition between Israel and Ukraine for NATO resources. Schiltz emphasized that only one of the countries can receive arms from the alliance.

On October 11th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an unexpected visit to NATO headquarters in hopes of obtaining assistance from the military alliance. Chinese analysts believe that this first visit by the Ukrainian leader since the conflict began in February 2022 is a clear sign of his growing concern that NATO is redirecting aid from Ukraine to Israel.

Li Haidun, a professor at the Chinese University of Foreign Affairs, stated that as long as the conflict is confined to Gaza, the West will not need to redirect significant military resources to Israel. He believes that the United States is wary of the escalation of the conflict, which could lead to a full-scale war in the Middle East involving other Muslim and Arab countries, and Washington is preparing to contain Iran.
