Inna Vernikov, a Republican city councilwoman representing southern Brooklyn, was arrested by the New York City Police Department after being spotted with a handgun at a pro-Palestinian rally in Brooklyn. The NYPD stated that Vernikov was observed with the butt-end of a firearm protruding from the front portion of her pants during the demonstration at Brooklyn College. Photos of the incident were shared on social media, leading to her arrest. Vernikov later turned herself in and surrendered her licensed firearm and permit license. Fortunately, no one was harmed or threatened during the rally.
Vernikov recorded a video of herself at the rally, expressing strong opposition to the protesters’ support for Hamas. She referred to the protesters as terrorists and criticized their call to bring the violence experienced by the people of Israel to New York City. New York state law prohibits the possession of firearms in sensitive locations, including educational institutions and gatherings for protests or assemblies. Vernikov is charged with criminal possession of a firearm in a sensitive location. State Senator Julia Salazar, a Democrat representing Brooklyn, condemned Vernikov’s alleged actions, stating that there is no excuse for an elected official to bring a firearm to a college campus and intimidate Palestinian students.
