Lawmakers Call on Biden’s Department of Education to Address Anti-Semitism on College Campuses Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

Senior strategic analyst retired Gen. Jack Keane has expressed concerns about the perception of the United States being perceived as weak and in decline by China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. This comes as dozens of lawmakers, led by Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., have called on President Biden’s Department of Education to take action against student groups that have shown support for Hamas terrorists. The letter, signed by 44 lawmakers, urges Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to protect Jewish students on college campuses across the country, as anti-Semitic incidents have surged amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The letter highlights the alarming statements and celebrations of the terror attack by student groups, condemning their use of imagery and rhetoric that glorifies the tactics employed by Hamas. The lawmakers criticize universities for their silence on the issue, particularly considering their claims of inclusivity and tolerance while failing to address the current crisis of anti-Semitism. Walberg emphasizes the urgent need for the Biden administration to address this anti-Semitism crisis and investigate why college campuses have become hotbeds for such actions.

Various Students for Justice in Palestine chapters at universities nationwide have released statements rejecting Israel as a victim and portraying Hamas as fighting for liberation. The chapter at the University of California, Berkeley, argues that Palestinian existence is inherently an act of resistance due to Israel’s occupation and settler colonialism. Similarly, the George Washington University chapter expresses support for the liberation of Palestine and justifies resistance against the “violent 75-year long colonization” of their homeland.

The Israeli military has responded to the recent attacks by Hamas, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,200 people in Israel, including 25 Americans. Hamas has also taken over 100 people hostage, including Americans. The Biden administration is actively working to address the situation and secure the release of the hostages.

The letter from lawmakers calls for immediate action from the Department of Education to protect Jewish students and address the rise of anti-Semitism on college campuses. As of now, Secretary Cardona’s office has not provided a response.
