NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that NATO countries have no intention of conducting nuclear weapons testing. This comes in response to Moscow’s statements regarding the situation with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), as reported by RIA Novosti. “NATO allies have adhered to the provisions regarding nuclear testing for 25 years, and we have no plans to resume testing,” he said after the first day of defense ministers’ meetings in Brussels. Stoltenberg emphasized that NATO closely monitors Russia’s activities in this regard and has not noticed any changes in their positioning of nuclear weapons that require a response from the alliance.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that Russia has no choice but to mirror the United States’ approach to the denuclearization of the CTBT. The State Duma Council decided on October 9 to assign the Committee on International Affairs to study the question of withdrawing the CTBT ratification, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies. Executive Secretary of the CTBT Organization Robert Floyd expressed concern over Russia’s actions and requested a meeting with “key leaders” in Russia.
