A 24-year-old social worker in Ohio has been arrested after being accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy she was assigned to counsel. Payton Shires was apprehended on her birthday, Friday, without incident, after confessing to the relationship during a three-way call with the boy’s mother and the police. Shires, who was previously employed by the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP), which offers counseling and support for families involved in the foster care system, now faces charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
The incident came to light when the boy’s mother discovered suspicious text messages on her son’s cellphone from Shires and promptly reported the matter to the authorities on September 27. Upon investigation, the police found a video on the teenager’s phone that showed Shires and the minor engaged in sexual conduct. The boy confirmed to detectives that he had engaged in sexual activities with Shires several times in September at various locations in Columbus.
Shires, whose social worker license was issued in June, is currently being held on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 16. The NYAP has expressed its cooperation with the police investigation and emphasized the importance of protecting children. The organization has reported the situation to the Franklin County Children Services and is working closely with them and the Columbus Police Department on this case.
