Novavax Ships Millions of Updated COVID-19 Vaccine Doses to U.S. Distributors

Vaccine maker Novavax Inc has announced that it has successfully shipped millions of doses of its updated COVID-19 vaccine to distributors. This comes after receiving approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use in individuals aged 12 years and older. However, certain batches of the vaccine required additional clearance from the FDA before they could be released.

Novavax expects the updated shots to be available at U.S. pharmacies this week. This development is crucial for the Maryland-based company, as its COVID vaccine is its only marketed product. In order to stay financially stable, Novavax has implemented cost-cutting measures and is relying on the commercial sales of its updated vaccine.

Unlike its mRNA rivals, Novavax missed out on the lucrative pandemic vaccine market due to manufacturing issues that caused delays in filing for approval during the height of the COVID crisis. Nevertheless, the company’s protein-based vaccine utilizes a tried-and-tested technology that has been used for decades to combat diseases.

Novavax’s success in delivering its updated vaccine to distributors marks a significant step forward in the ongoing fight against COVID-19. The availability of these doses will help to expand vaccination efforts, particularly among the younger population.
