Coast Guard Rescues Three People from Capsized Vessel off New Jersey Coast

The Coast Guard successfully rescued three individuals who were found clinging to the hull of a capsized vessel off the coast of New Jersey. The operator of the disabled 18-foot vessel reached out to the Coast Guard’s Delaware Bay sector for assistance, stating that their boat was disabled and they needed help getting to shore. The distress call also mentioned that the vessel was anchored in Great Bay, located in Little Egg Harbor Township, less than a mile away from the Great Bay Marina.

As inclement weather worsened, the operator reported that their boat was sinking. Responding swiftly, the Coast Guard rerouted an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter that was already in the air for routine training. Additionally, a TowBoatUS commercial salvage team, alerted by the distress call, headed to the scene. They reported to the Coast Guard that the vessel had capsized, and its three occupants were clinging to the overturned hull.

Due to shallow water and challenging weather conditions, direct aid was not immediately possible. However, the Coast Guard continued to monitor the situation and provide updates to the rescuers on the scene. When the Coast Guard helicopter arrived, a rescue swimmer bravely entered the water and assisted in hoisting all three individuals to safety. The rescued individuals were then taken to the Coast Guard’s Atlantic City air station, where they were met by emergency medical services personnel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role played by the Coast Guard in safeguarding lives at sea. Their prompt response, along with the assistance of the commercial salvage team, ensured the successful rescue of the stranded individuals. The Coast Guard’s dedication to maritime safety and their ability to navigate challenging conditions is commendable.

The importance of maintaining communication tools, such as the VHF-FM radio used by the operator to contact the Coast Guard, is highlighted in this incident. This technology played a crucial role in alerting authorities to the disabled vessel and facilitating a swift rescue operation.

Overall, the successful rescue of the three individuals from the capsized vessel off the New Jersey coast stands as a testament to the bravery and professionalism of the Coast Guard. Their commitment to protecting lives and ensuring maritime safety is of utmost importance in safeguarding our waters.
