A concealed carry holder in Chicago thwarted a drive-by shooting after a car crash, saving lives and highlighting the rising crime concerns in the city. The incident occurred on the Southwest Side when a car crash involving four vehicles and a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus took place near 47th and Archer. As witnesses exited the bus, a suspect in a white Dodge Durango opened fire on the group. The quick-thinking concealed carry holder, identified as a tow truck driver, responded by firing two shots at the shooter, forcing them to flee the scene.
Lorenzo Hernandez, a witness to the incident, expressed gratitude for his safety, stating, “In Chicago, you go to work not knowing if you will come back home. This happens everywhere. I thank God that I didn’t get hit.” Hernandez’s SUV was hit by gunfire, but fortunately, the bullet was stopped by the car. The tow truck driver, who remained anonymous, also thanked Hernandez for his vehicle, which shielded him from harm.
The shooting resulted in a 55-year-old male CTA bus supervisor sustaining a gunshot wound to his thigh. He was not the intended target of the shooting and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The police investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made yet. However, the Chicago Police Department confirmed that a witness with a concealed carry permit had returned fire on the suspect.
