In a recent incident, a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet intercepted a US Navy plane, known as the “Poseidon,” as it attempted to approach the country’s border. This event took place in the airspace above the Norwegian Sea, according to an official statement released by the Russian Ministry of Defense on their official Telegram channel.
According to the ministry, on October 6th, Russian air control detected an approaching aircraft in the vicinity of the Norwegian Sea, close to the state border. To identify the target, a MiG-31 fighter jet from the Northern Fleet was deployed into the air. It is worth noting that the MiG-31 is part of the North Fleet’s arsenal.
“The crew of the Russian fighter jet identified the airborne target as the US Navy’s P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft,” the statement clarified. Upon noticing the MiG-31, the crew of the American aircraft decided to turn back. As a result, the Russian fighter jet successfully prevented any violation of the state border, as stated in the announcement.
The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that throughout the operation, the MiG-31 acted in accordance with international law, refraining from crossing the airspace of foreign states and maintaining a safe distance from the foreign aircraft.
Earlier, a Russian Ka-29 helicopter destroyed an unmanned Ukrainian military boat that was heading towards the Crimean Peninsula.
The interception of the US Navy plane by a Russian fighter jet has once again highlighted the tensions between Russia and the United States.
