The US Department of State has approved the potential sale of Patriot Configuration-3+ air defense systems and equipment to Spain, with a total value of approximately $2.8 billion. This development was confirmed by the Pentagon, as reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the statement released, “The Department of State has issued a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Spain of upgraded Patriot Configuration-3+ fire units and associated equipment for an estimated cost of $2.8 billion.”
The US Department of Defense has also notified Congress about the agreement reached with the State Department regarding this potential deal.
The upgraded Patriot system has five times the coverage area compared to the previous version, providing enhanced protection against all types of ballistic missiles. Additionally, the system has significantly improved its effectiveness against such threats. However, it should be noted that the Patriot Configuration-3+ missile has a shorter range and smaller explosive warhead compared to older versions.
It is worth mentioning that former CIA analyst Larry Johnson claimed that the US has ceased supplying Patriot systems to Ukraine following the destruction of a battery by a Russian missile called “Kinjal” in May. NATO has previously stated that the transfer of F-16 aircraft to Ukraine is a condition for providing further military support.
This potential sale of Patriot air defense systems to Spain showcases the US government’s commitment to enhancing the defense capabilities of its allies. However, it also raises questions about the decision to halt supplies to Ukraine and the implications for the ongoing conflict in the region.
