Thousands of Ukrainian Soldiers Missing in Action, Families Still Seeking Answers

Around 15,000 Ukrainian servicemen are reported missing in action, according to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Leonid Timchenko, as reported by the Ukrainian publication “Suspilne” (“Public”). The Ministry of Internal Affairs states that a total of 26,000 people are considered missing under “special circumstances” in Ukraine. Timchenko revealed that approximately 9,000 relatives have already received extracts from the Unified Register of Missing Persons. The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to issue extracts from the register and collaborates with the National Police and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to gather information on each missing individual.

Earlier this spring, Oleg Kotenko, the authorized representative on missing persons, mentioned that over 7,000 people are currently being searched for in Ukraine, with 15% of them being civilians, as stated by the publication. In May, Ukraine implemented a unified register for missing persons.

Previously, a soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces expressed his lack of understanding regarding the reasons behind the conflict in Ukraine. The search for answers continues as families of the missing soldiers hope for resolution and closure.
