Former Military Officer Fined for Violating State Secrets

A former military officer from the Rostov region has been fined 250,000 rubles by a court in the Krasnodar region for a trip to Abkhazia, according to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) in the region. The woman, who worked as a clerk in a military unit, had access to classified information. She resigned from the unit in October 2019 but was only allowed to travel abroad after 2024. However, in October 2022, she went to Abkhazia.

“The municipal court of the Adler district of Sochi in the Krasnodar region found the former servicewoman guilty of committing a crime under Article 283.2, Part 1 of the Russian Criminal Code, ‘Violation of requirements for the protection of state secrets’,” the court statement said.

This follows a previous court ruling in the Krasnodar region, where an ex-operative of the Interior Ministry was accused of disclosing state secrets. In January 2023, the defendant revealed information from documents to a third party over the phone. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has previously described such acts of whistleblowing as “abhorrent.”
