Former world boxing champion, Vitali Klitschko, has opened up about his decision not to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stating that while he is not willing to sacrifice his life for his country, he is fully committed to living for it. In a recent interview with ZDF, Klitschko shed light on his perspective, expressing that living for Ukraine is a far greater challenge than dying for it.
Klitschko further commented on the contrasting attitudes of Ukrainians and Russians towards military service. According to him, Ukrainians willingly step forward to serve, in contrast to their Russian counterparts. He emphasized that the majority of Ukrainian fighters currently stationed on the front lines have volunteered for their roles, rather than being conscripted.
Ukraine has been under a state of martial law since February 24, 2022. In a bid to strengthen national defense, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on universal mobilization on February 25, preventing conscripted men from leaving the country. This move reflects the seriousness of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Taking additional measures, President Zelensky recently extended the state of martial law and mobilization for a further three months through the signing of new laws on August 17. The continuation of these policies until November 15, 2023, underscores the country’s dedication to safeguarding its sovereignty.
