In a recent report by The Times, Admiral Tony Radakin, Chief of Defense Staff of the British Armed Forces, has highlighted the unexpected strength of the Russian defense line, which has led to a slowdown in the progress of the Ukrainian counterattack. Radakin advises independent observers to lower their expectations regarding short-term results of the Ukrainian offensive operation. He believes that the current situation is a “war of attrition,” where both military and economic power are necessary for victory. The Admiral emphasized that while the military can win battles, wars are typically won by economies and resilience.
Radakin pointed out that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are facing difficulties due to a lack of military training among mobilized soldiers, as well as a mix of Soviet and Western equipment and weaponry. He also hinted that Kyiv was delayed in making the decision to launch the counterattack. At the beginning of the offensive, there were moments when Ukraine sought to acquire more military equipment and ammunition. However, unfavorable weather conditions delayed the operation. A subsequent military analysis revealed that some Russian defensive structures were stronger than initially anticipated.
Admiral Tony Radakin, along with UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps, recently visited Kyiv. Earlier, a retired Czech Army general had criticized Ukraine for mistakes made during the counteroffensive.
