Off-Duty Trooper Shoots Suspected Intruder in Houston Apartment Building

An off-duty Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper shot a man suspected of breaking into his Houston apartment building on Monday. Houston police received a call about a shooting in the early hours of the morning, and authorities swiftly arrived at the scene.

According to Houston Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir, the trooper, who lived in the building, reported that a male suspect was attempting to break into his fifth-floor apartment. Before resorting to gunfire, the trooper had repeatedly instructed the suspect to stop and leave. However, when the suspect continued his attempt to gain entry, the trooper fired shots through the door.

The suspect, described as a Black man in his 30s, managed to flee the apartment but was later found by responding officers, bleeding from his injuries. The officers quickly applied two tourniquets to save his life, and he was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. Fortunately, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Houston Assistant Chief Bashir emphasized that the suspect and the trooper, who reside in the same building, will both be questioned about the incident. The motive behind the suspect’s actions remains unclear at this time.
