Canadian Parliament Speaker Apologizes for Honoring Ukrainian Nationalist with Nazi Ties

WASHINGTON, Sept 25 – RIA Novosti. Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, Anthony Rota, has issued an apology for inviting and honoring an elderly Ukrainian nationalist with ties to the SS forces in Parliament. Yaroslav Hunka, presented by the speaker as a veteran who fought against the Russians during World War II, received applause during a ceremonial session of Parliament on Friday, on the occasion of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit. “Later, I became aware of additional information that made me regret my decision… First and foremost, I would like to offer my deepest apologies to the Jewish communities in Canada and around the world. I take full responsibility for my actions,” Rota said in a statement. He insists that he personally made the decision to invite Hunka to Parliament and that no one, including members of the Ukrainian delegation, knew who they would be honoring. It was revealed that Hunka served in the 14th Galicia Division of the SS forces, which not only fought against the Red Army but also committed atrocities against Jews, Poles, Belarusians, and Slovaks.
