Surge in Illegal Crossings at U.S.-Mexico Border: Record-Breaking Numbers and Ongoing Challenges

The U.S.-Mexico border is experiencing a surge in illegal crossings this month, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountering a high number of migrants per day. According to CBP data reported by NBC News, over 7,500 migrants were encountered on Sunday alone. This includes significant numbers in Rio Grande Valley, Del Rio, Tucson, and El Paso. While border crossings have been increasing since September, they are still below the record set in May. The Biden administration had previously celebrated the lower numbers over the summer as a sign that their border policies were effective. However, Fox News recently obtained drone footage showing more than 2,200 migrants crossing the border near Eagle Pass, Texas. CBP acknowledged the ongoing challenges and stated that they are working to address the situation. The agency plans to quickly process migrants in accordance with the law. Sunday’s high number of encounters follows an average of 4,300 daily crossings in July. The CBP’s El Paso Office of Field Operations temporarily suspended cargo processing at the Bridge of the Americas port of entry to focus on processing noncitizens arriving between ports of entry. CBP emphasized that these temporary measures are in place to support their mission and ensure the safety of those in their custody.
