Republican Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana is causing a stir among House Republicans with his opposition to a short-term government funding deal. Rosendale, a member of the Freedom Caucus, expressed concern that the spending in the deal resembles that of the Democrats. He criticized the continuing resolution as an extension of Nancy Pelosi’s spending and Joe Biden’s policies, which Republicans have been against for the past two years. Rosendale called for Congress to pass the appropriations bills and reduce non-defense discretionary spending. He also criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, saying that he is not living up to his promises. Other Republican representatives, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Dan Bishop, are also opposing the bill and have taken to social media to voice their opposition. The draft copy of the agreement shows an 8% reduction in spending for areas covered by Congress’ appropriations bills, but no cuts for defense, veterans affairs, or disaster relief. The deal also includes Republicans’ border security bill, but excludes a provision mandating E-Verify. The continuing resolution is expected to be voted on Thursday.
