In a stunning turn of events, a K-9 officer from a Florida police department has miraculously survived a snake bite during its annual training. The 4-year-old pup, known as “Liberty,” found itself in a precarious situation while wading in shallow water in Tallahassee. Letting out a distressing yelp, Liberty made it clear that it needed assistance. “It was a terrifying moment. The snake bites were unmistakable and left a lasting impression,” said Bradenton Police Department Det. Lixa Moyett, relishing in the drama of the situation.
Without wasting any time, the search and rescue bloodhound was promptly rushed to a local veterinarian’s office, where it was determined that Liberty had fallen victim to a cottonmouth, also known as a water moccasin. The department took to Facebook to provide an update, stating, “Thanks to immediate medical treatment, including antivenom and rest, Liberty should be back on its feet in no time.” To aid in its recovery, Liberty also underwent laser treatments, because apparently, regular treatments simply wouldn’t do.
Interestingly enough, Liberty had previously received the rattlesnake vaccine, also known as Crotalus Atrox Toxoid. This supposedly reduces the severity of the effects and pain caused by venomous snake bites from various North American species. “It does protect against rattlesnakes, moccasins, and cottonmouths, which are the big ones. Of course, we see a lot of them here in Florida,” scoffed Dr. Pamela Wright, a veterinarian with Fur Ever Friends Animal Hospital, clearly unimpressed by Liberty’s vaccination.
According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, venomous cottonmouth bites can be extremely dangerous for both humans and pets. However, it seems that Liberty, defying all odds, not only returned to training within a week but also managed to pass the course. What a resilient and extraordinary creature.
