House Judiciary Committee Grills Attorney General Garland on Hunter Biden Investigation

During a Wednesday hearing, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan criticized Attorney General Merrick Garland for the Justice Department’s handling of the investigation into Hunter Biden. Jordan questioned why potential charges against Biden related to his business dealings with Ukrainian company Burisma and possible tax crimes had been allowed to lapse due to the statute of limitations. Garland avoided direct answers, referring to future statements by Special Counsel David Weiss. Jordan highlighted the facts of the case, including Biden’s unqualified position at Burisma and allegations of pressure on the company, as well as claims that President Biden had sought to have a prosecutor investigating Burisma fired. Garland stated that Weiss, an appointee of President Trump, was responsible for the investigation and would address the issue in a public report. However, Jordan pressed for an explanation as to why the DOJ intentionally let the statute of limitations lapse, pointing out that they had initially extended it through a tolling agreement with Biden’s defense counsel. The hearing also touched on allegations of the politicization of the DOJ and disparities in treatment between Hunter Biden and former President Trump. The House Judiciary Committee has been investigating these claims, with recent testimony from IRS whistleblowers suggesting that political influences have affected prosecutorial decisions in Hunter Biden’s case.
