Eric Adams Hopes Biden Addresses NYC’s Migrant Crisis, But They Haven’t Spoken

Mayor Eric Adams expressed his hope that President Biden would address New York City’s $12 billion migrant crisis during his trip to the Big Apple. However, it appears that the two Democrats have not spoken since earlier this year. Adams emphasized that all his meetings would be on his public schedule and stated that “New York City has done its part” while urging Biden to understand the economic burden the city is facing due to the crisis.

Adams, who was once referred to as the “Biden of Brooklyn,” disclosed that he has not had any communication with the president since earlier this year, neither on the migrant crisis nor on any other issue. Following Adams’ criticism of Biden in May, he was removed from Biden’s re-election team. However, Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul still remains a member of the presidential campaign’s team of surrogates. Adams expressed that he had communicated with White House staffers to emphasize the urgency of the situation and the need for proper funding and a decompression strategy.

Meanwhile, Gov. Hochul shared on X that she had a productive conversation with President Biden regarding specific requests for help with the migrant crisis. She commended his leadership at the UN but received criticism from Rep. Nicole Malliotakis for not requesting the reversal of executive orders that contributed to the crisis and the securing of the border.

The migrant crisis in New York City remains significant, with over 110,000 migrants having arrived and 60,000 still in the city’s care. Both Adams and Hochul have been advocating for federal work authorization for migrants, and Hochul is considering implementing migrant work visas at the state level. Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine estimated that the asylum seekers are costing the city $10 million per day.

President Biden, who did not address the border crisis during his UN General Assembly speech, is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. However, neither Biden nor Adams’ public schedules have listed any meetings between them since the president’s arrival in New York.

In the midst of the UN General Assembly, Adams has met with other international figures, including Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, and Seoul, South Korea Mayor Oh Se-hoon.

The strained relations between Adams and Biden reflect the challenges faced by New York City in dealing with the migrant crisis. The economic burden and lack of communication underscore the urgency for proper funding and collaboration to address this ongoing issue.
